Naveen Patnaik completes one year as Orissa CM

Chief Minister of Orissa, Mr Naveen Patnaik, completes one year in office today in his third term at the helm of affairs of the state.
The report card for Mr Patnaik includes some bold steps towards providng land records to tribals, irrigation to a large hectares of non-irrigated land, special package for backward districts, the red areas in it are massive corruption in mining sector, police action for land acquisition and ever increasing Maoist menace.
During the last one year, unending problems have visited Mr Patnaik and his government. The multi-crore mining scam has dented into the Teflon image of Mr Patnaik. This has been the dominant issue in Orissa for last 9 months. Pending cases in Supreme Court and Orissa High Court are hanging like ‘Swords of Damocles', feel many political analysts. At the heat of the scam, a defensive Chief Minister and his party have to enforce a premature closure of the Orissa Legislative Assembly despite brute strength to scuttle discussion on the sensitive issue. Industrialisation, the prime agenda of the State Government took a back seat with problems for land acquisition. Mega projects are in limbo. Vedanta projects in Lanjigarh and Puri have increasingly earned wrath of regulatory authorities and local people. Kalinga Nagar, steel hub of Orissa faced numerous troubles and major projects failed to achieve their deadlines. Proposed POSCO steel plant in Jagatsinghpur district is on ‘as is where is basis’. World's largest steel maker Arcelor Mittal is now with the Government of Karnataka to quiet shift its location from Orissa. Farmers suicide and Maoists problem have been increasing with every passing day.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Mr Patnaik has done some remarkable job by implementing 50 per cent reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions, providing land records to about 8 lakh landless people and declaring special schemes for tribal-dominated districts of Gajapati and Kandhamal. He has also included additional 27000 hectares of non-irrigated land in various schemes of irrigation in the last one year.
