In Afghanistan, NATO-led foreign troops have detained a man accused of smuggling arms from Iran to Taliban militants in southern Kandahar province but have retracted earlier claims that the suspect was a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Quds group. NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said today that initial intelligence reports led ISAF to believe he was a member of the force, but after gathering more information, it was determined that while the individual may be affiliated with several militant-related organizations, he is not a member of the force. It accused the suspect of facilitating the movement of weapons between Iran and Kandahar province without accusing the Iranian government of being complicit in the flow of weapon to the Taliban. Although Kabul and Tehran share good relations, US officials have repeatedly accused Iran of assisting militants, and some Afghan intelligence and border police officials have accused Iranian intelligence of training and equipping Taliban militants in Afghanistan. Iranian government has rejected such allegations in the past and has demanded withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan saying it causes instability.
