In Libya, NATO forces hit eight warships used by forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gadhafi in a series of air strikes since late last night. The vessels targeted were in the ports of Tripoli, Sirte and Al Khums. An alliance official said NATO had no choice but to take decisive action after pro-Gadhafi forces carried out mining operations and escalated their use of maritime force. Witnesses said they heard explosions and saw smoke bellowing out of Tripoli's seaport. Elsewhere, pro-government forces shelled rebel fighters in the mountainous region southwest of Tripoli. Reports say forces loyal to Gadhafi and the rebels are engaged in intense fighting for the control of roads that lead to the Libyan capital, a stronghold of Mr. Gadhafi.
