NATO airstrike kills senior Taliban commander in Kandahar

In Afghanistan, a NATO airstrike killed a senior Taliban commander and several of his fighters in the southern province of Kandahar. <br/><br/>NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in statement that the strike targeted Haji Amir, one of the top two rebel commanders in Kandahar's Panjwayee district.<br/><br/>The air raid was called in after Amir and his fighters had been tracked for several days. The statement said Amir was among hundreds of Taliban prisoners who escaped from Kandahar jail in June 2008. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, ISAF also carried out air strikes today morning to target the Taliban in eastern Nuristan province in an attempt to dislodge the militants from a district they captured from government forces last week. <br/><br/>The militants seized the district of Bargi Matal driving out Afghan security forces after days of fierce fighting.
