NATO, Afghan Forces regain troubled Uruzgan province from Taliban

In Afghanistan, police and NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) have regained the control of a key district in southern Uruzgan province, which was so far under Taliban control. A police commander said the combined force arrested four militant's commanders including the shadow district governor Mullah Hikmat during the operation. He said that no casualties on combined troops and civilians were reported during the operation. Some 10 districts in southern Afghanistan are considered to be totally under Taliban control. Most of the 30 thousand US troops arriving in the war-torn country are to launch operations in these districts to regain control and establish governance. Meanwhile, militants gunned down a government official in Taliban birthplace of Kandahar today morning. Spokesman for provincial administration Zalmai Ayubi said that two armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on the Director of cooperative, Hussain Walasi while he was shopping and killed him on the spot. This is the second assassination of its kind in Kandahar over the past one week and the third one over the past one month. In similar incidents, unknown armed men shot dead Azizullah Yarmal, deputy mayor of Kandahar city, early this week and Abdul Majir Babai, director of cultural department, late last month.
