Nationalised banks' NPAs rose to 2.16 lakh cr in 2013-14

The non-performing assets of the nationalised banks have increased from 9,190 crore rupees in 2011-2012 to 2,16,739 crore rupees in 2013-2014. Former journalist Ketan Tirodkar obtained this data from the Reserve Bank of India under the right to information. Tirodkar has filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI investigation into what he terms "an NPA scam".As the lawyers from RBI and CBI were not present yesterday, the division bench headed by the Chief Justice Mohit Shah adjourned the case to February 12. Tirodkar has alleged that the nationalised banks do not comply with the Banking Regulation Act which mandates periodical tendering of audit reports to RBI, so as to suppress the information regarding NPAs and shield the beneficiaries.
