National Voters' Day: Need to check money, muscle power in polls, says President

Country is celebrating National Voter's Day today. The theme this year is Inclusive and Qualitative Participation. President Pranab Mukherjee today gave away awards for Best Electoral Practices to Chief Electoral Officers, District Electoral Officers and other officers involved in election management. Awards were also given to Media Houses and Civil Society Organizations for best campaign in Voters' Education and Awareness.<br/> <br/>Speaking on the occasion, President Mukherjee stressed on the need to check money and muscle power in elections. He said introduction of Electronic Voting Machines have brought remarkable change in country's voting system. He applauded Election Commission for conducting free and fair polls in Left Wing Extremism affected states and militancy hit Jammu and Kashmir. <br/>Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi released a book titled, Belief in the Ballot, and presented the first copy to the President.<br/><br/>25th January is also the foundation day of the Commission, which came into being on this day in 1950. The Commission's objective through National Voters' Day is to increase enrolment of voters, especially the newly eligible ones. The Day is also utilized to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process.
