The National Public broadcasting day is being celebrated on Thursday to commemorate Mahatama Gandhi's only visit to All India Radio in 1947. <br/><br/>A special function has been organised at the premises of All India Radio New Delhi and various other stations of AIR across the country to commemorate the day.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent report was on this day 62 years back that Mahatama Gandhi went live on AIR for the first and the last time. It was to make an appeal to the refugees camped in Kurukeshtra after partition.<br/><br/>Today when there are a number of private TV channels and FM stations and with TRP ratings dictating what goes on air the role of the public broadcasters like All India Radio has become significantly important .<br/><br/>AIR has 99.9 per cent reach and it can be heard in the remotest of places in several languages and dialects.<br/><br/>The greatest tribute we can pay to Mahatama Gandhi on this day is to bring to the fore the issues that confront the common man and touches the human life .
