National Policy to protect rights of senior citizens under review

The committee constituted under the Chairpersonship of Dr Mohini Giri to review the National Policy for Older Person will give its recommendation by December this year. This was stated by Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnil in New Delhi. He said since the policy was formulated in 1999 and situation has changed a lot and the policy needs to be reviewed. He was speaking after conferring six Vayosreshtha Samman 2010 in New Delhi today. He said that India is one of the leading nations in the world where safeguarding the rights of the elderly has been an issue of paramount concern to the government. Wasnik said that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 is major milestone to provide for maintenance, shelter, health and security of senior citizens in the country. So far 22 States and all Union Territories have notified the Act.He, however, expressed concern that present social behavior has resulted in neglect and alienation of elders. He said this creates a challenging situation not only in terms of their healthcare but also about their financial security and emotional needs.AIR correspondent says that six elederly persons were honoured for their achievements in different fields. Our correspondent spoke to Dr. V. S. Natarajan who received Vayoshrshtha Samman for lifetime achievement. He is first professor of Geriatric Medicine in the country.
