National permit system for operating trucks across the country has become operational. According to government sources, the system could not be operational from 1st of this month due to some procedural delays. The national permit will be granted only after verification of documents by the authorities. These includes age of the vehicle, fitness and insurance of payment and other taxes. Our correspondent reports an amount of 15 thousand rupees will have to be deposited by cash or demand draft in the State Bank of India.All India Motor Transport Congress has hailed the government' decision. Speaking to AIR, the president of the forum Mr G R Shanmugappa said that the government will honour other commitments made to the truckers including abolition of anti dumping duty on tyres and toll.
