National Litigation Policy aimed at preventing Bhopal Gas like cases: Moily

The Law Minister Mr Veerappa Moily said the launch of the National Litigation Policy is aimed at preventing the Bhopal Gas Leak like cases in future. It will also help reducing the number of pending cases in the courts across the country. <br/> <br/>Launching the new Policy in New Delhi, Mr Moily asserted that the purpose of the new law is also reduce the government litigation cases in the courts so that they can devote more time in resolving other pending cases. <br/> <br/>He said the step will achieve the goal in the national legal mission to reduce average pendency time from 15 years to three years. Describing the new policy as a part of the judicial and legal reforms undertaken by the government since long, the Law Minister said that such a step is being taken for the first time in the history of independent India. <br/> <br/>Mr Moily said that he will visit some of the states to hold discussions with Chief Justices of High Courts, State law ministers and other stake holders for the formation of State level Litigation policies. He said several issues like the setting up of more Gram Nyayalayas, family courts and fast-track courts will also be discussed with the state governments.<br/> <br/>Speaking on the occasion, the Attorney General of India, Mr. G E Vahnavati, said under the new policy, each and every government litigation will be monitored. Replying to a question whether the Centre will file a curative petition before the Supreme Court, Mr. Vahnavati observed that the decision will be taken only after the Union Cabinet approves the final report of Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal gas leak case. Mr Vahnavati said the 1996 judgement of the apex court was wrong as it has a lot of contradictions. <br/> <br/>AIR Correspondent reports that the National Litigation Policy will be implemented from first of next month.<br/>
