Today is the National Girl Child Day. In a bit to raise public awareness on the deep bias against female children in India, government declared in 2009, to observe January 24 as the ‘National Girl Child Day’.

The date marks the day in 1966 when Indira Gandhi was sworn in as the first woman Prime Minister of India. Government celebrates this day as National Girl child day every year. UNICEF celebrates Girl Child Day on 24th September.
