National Girl Child Day being celebrated in country today

National Girl Child Day is being celebrated across the country today. Every year since 2009, 24th January is celebrated as National Girls Child day to highlight the plight of country's girl child. This year the theme are Adolescent Girls-Issues and Challenges to address concerns relating to health, nutrition and education of adolescent girls alongwith empowering them to face challenges like Domestic Violence, Child marriage and dowry. Government has launched several schemes to empower females in the age group of 11 to 18 years. Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls, SABLA was launched in November last year for all round development of adolescent girls. Under another scheme “Dhanlakshmi” conditional cash transfers are made to the family of the girl Child up to eighth standard.
