National Games: Services upstaged Maharashtra from pole position

In the on-going Ranchi National Games, Services upstaged Maharashtra from the pole position of the overall medals tally with its athletes excelling in both, shooting and cycling on the eighth day on Sunday. Services with 35 Gold, 26 Silver and 23 Bronze are now ahead of Maharashtra who have 32 Gold, 34 Silver and 34 Bronze medals in their kitty. The biggest shock of the day came in Athletics, where Asian Games Gold Medallist and National Record holder, Joseph Abraham was pushed to the second place by Punjab's Kuldev Singh who won the 400 metre hurdles with a Games record timing of 50.31 seconds. However, it was Indian Cricket Captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's surprise visit to the Mega Sports Complex which hogged the spotlight. Dhoni presented medals to the winners and in the afternoon took the centre-stage in the men's football action between Goa and Jharkhand in the city stadium. In Cycling, the Services team comprising of Atul Singh, Satbir Singh, Vinod Mallik and Sombir Singh bagged gold in the elite men 4000 metre team pursuit final while it also claimed the coveted yellow metal in both, team and individual event of the men's 25 metre rapid fire pistol competitions. Tripura's Dipa Karmakar sparkled in gymnastics as she clinched four gold medals taking her overall medals haul to five, the highest by any gymnast on the concluding day of the event. After taking the all round individual title, Karmakar clinched the girl's table vault, uneven bars, floor exercises and balanced beam during the day to emerge top in the individual medal list followed by Maharashtra's Aksheta Shate who took four gold in the Rhythmic gymnastics.
