National Games: Services retain top position in medals tally; Boxers withdraw from games

At the 35th National Games in Kerala, Deepa Karmakar of Tripura today won gold in Gymnastics, while Dharmendra of Services won gold medal in Yachting. In shooting 50 metre Rifle three position, Kerala's Elizabeth Susan Koshy won gold medal, achieving a golden double. Earlier,she had won gold in the 50 metre rifle prone shooting. Kerala excelled in rowing events, winning 4 gold medals, four silver medals and 3 bronze medals. Kerala Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has announced a cash award of five lakh rupees each for Kerala athletes, winning gold medals in the National Games. Kerala has so far won 11 gold medals. Services maintain top position in the medals tally with 26 gold medals, nine silver and ten bronze medals. They are closely followed by Haryana in the second position with 25 gold medals,11 silver medals and five bronze medals. Maharashtra is in the third spot with 18 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 17 bronze medals. Hosts Kerala is in the 4th position with 11 gold ,9 silver and 13 bronze medals. Meanwhile, prominent boxing stars Olympian Vijender Singh, Sarjubala Devi,Preeth Beniwal and Sumit Sanguan have withdrawn from the National games boxing events.This follows difference of opinion between Boxing India and Indian Olympic Association. Boxing events are scheduled to begin tomorrow.
