National Food Security Bill- 2013 gets President’s assent

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the National Food Security Bill- 2013. The Bill was passed by Parliament in the recently concluded Monsoon session. The Bill seeks to provide highly subsidized foodgrains to the country's two-third population.

It will guarantee 5 kilogram of rice, wheat and coarse cereals per month per person at the rate of 1 to 3 rupees per kilogram.

AIR correspondent reporters that with President giving his assent, India has now joined the select league of nations that guarantee food grains to its majority of population. The food security programme will be the largest in the world.
