A National Council for Human Resource in Health will be set up soon as an overarching regulatory body to coordinate all aspects of medical education. Replying to questions in Lok Sabha today, the Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the consultation on the proposed Council are in the final stage. Apart from reforming the current regulatory framework, the aim of the Council is also to enhance supply of skilled manpower in the Health sector. The Council will consist of senior professionals and experts who will be selected through most stringent standards. In order to make the proposed Council more effective, the regulatory functions of the Council will have three bodies under its ambit – for accreditation, recognition and syllabi. Admitting that there is a huge shortage of Doctors and Nurses in the country, the Minister said that the government has taken several measures in this direction. He said that six AIIMS like medical colleges will start functioning next year and sanction has been given for opening of 150 nursing schools this year. He said that every district will have one nursing schools.
