Twenty two children including four girls have been selected for 2012 National Bravery Awards. One award will be given posthumously. The coveted Bharat Award will be conferred on 17 year old Master Tarang Atulbhai Mistry of Gujarat who saved four people from drowning in the Narmada river. The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award will be conferred on 18-year old Kumari Renu who was instrumentral in exposing the perpetrators of inhuman treatment of a children's home. The Sanjay Chopra Award will go to 11 and a half year old Master Gajendra Ram of Chattisgarh who saved a child from drowning in a well.
The Awards were announced at a function held in New Delhi this afternoon.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will present the awards at a ceremony ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. President Pranab Mukherjee and several other dignitaries will also host these children, who will be given a medal, certificate and cash prize.
Our correspondent reports that the National Bravery Awards were initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare to recognise deeds of bravery by children.
