Nation-wide bandh against petrol price hike evokes partial response

The nation-wide bandh called by some opposition parties against the
recent petrol price hike has evoked mixed response.Markets are closed is some parts of the country. Some train services were affected as people sat on tracks to protest against the hike in petrol prices. Office goers faced difficulties as some roads were
blocked by protesters in Delhi.
In Gujarat, most of the main markets are closed in all major cities
of state including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot however
vehicular traffic is running normally. In Rajasthan, City bus service
of roadways and rail services are normal.
In West Bengal, States government has taken precautions to contain the any untoward situation.In Jammu, all shops, markets and business establishments are closed today and inter city passenger traffic is off the roads but long
route buses are plying.
In Andhra Pradesh, public Transport bus services have been affected due to bandh in several towns while it evoked partial response in the
state capital Hyderabad.

In West Bengal, the bandh evoked little response. Most of the offices and establishments, educational institutions are open. However, train services of the eastern and south-eastern railways have been affected in some areas due to blockade on rail tracks by the bandh supporters.

In Mumbai, municipal buses, trains, autos and taxis are plying as usual but shop-keepers in various areas have kept their establishments closed. The dabbawalaas, who supply tiffin to office goers, have also taken a day off while the Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange and other commodity markets were functioning normally. All essential services like hospitals, fire brigade, water supply, sewerage operation and waste disposal remained unaffected.
However, incidents of stone pelting on government-run buses were reported from suburban parts of the city.

Maharashtra government has deployed at least 48,000 cops in various parts of Mumbai. State Home Minister R R Patil has said the government will take stringent action against those creating nuisance.
In Karnataka, shops and business establishments remained closed due to Bharat Bandh. Due to stone pelting and burning of a few public transport buses, the bus services were withdrawn since morning, thereby paralysing normal life.
In Madhya Pradesh the evoked mixed response. In capital Bhopal , main markets are closed but shops in interior parts of the city are open. Public transport and other vehicles are plying on the roads as normal days.
In Assam, Police arrested hundreds of picketers at Rangiya, Ledo, Badarpur and the Guwahati city who tried to disrupt the train services.
