A thankful nation today paid tributes to freedom fighter and martyr Shaheed Udham Singh on his 75th martyrdom day. Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal his cabinet colleagues and people paid tribute to the martyr at his memorial at Sunam in Sangrur district which is his native place.<br/><br/>Chief Minister said this true son of soil had in a heroic act exhibited exemplary courage by killing Michael O'Dwyer, the prime perpetrator of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He said the supreme sacrifice made by him during freedom struggle helped the country to overthrow the yoke of British imperialism. He also recalled the unparalleled sacrifice made by legendary martyrs like Lala Lajpat Rai Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru & Sukhdev and others during the Indian freedom movement.<br/><br/>The chief minister said in order to pay homage to such great heroes and others who had made sacrifices in national freedom struggle, the state government is constructing 'Jang-e-Azaadi' memorial at Kartarpur in Jalandhar district. He said the state government was committed for constructing a memorial to perpetuate the life and struggle of Shaheed Udham Singh, adding, they were finding a suitable chunk of land for this purpose.<br/><br/>Mr. Badal said the state government has postponed the annual state-level function to observe this sacred day in the light of week-long national mourning being observed in the memory of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. (underlined portion for Punjabi only) Besides this small functions were organised in different cities and towns of Punjab and Haryana to pay tributes to martyr. <br/><br/>Udham Singh was a revolutionary and a brave hearted man known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer on 13 March 1940 avenging the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre. He was in Jallian wala Bagh and had seen the massacre. On July 31st 1940 he was hanged in England .
