Nation is observing 117th birth anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh today. He was born on this day in 1899 at Sunam in Sangrur district of Punjab. Udham Singh was present in Amritsar's Jallianwala Bagh on the fateful Baisakhi Day of 13 April 1919, when a peaceful assembly of people was fired upon by British, killing thousands of people. <br/><br/>The event which Udham Singh used to recall with anger and sorrow turned him to the path of revolution. He avenged Jallianwala Bagh tragedy in March 1940 by killing Sir Michael O'Dwyer, in London, who was governor of Punjab when the Amritsar massacre had taken place. Udham Singh was hanged by British Government on July 31st,1940 in London.<br/><br/>Union Minister for Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal laid the foundation stone of a memorial at Sunam in the memory of the Shaheed Udham Singh. She said nation cannot forget its martyrs. <br/><br/>Punjab Government will spend 5 crore rupees on this memorial to be built on 4 acres of land.
