In Puducherry, people from all over the country thronged the Aurobindo Ashram to pay tributes to 'The Mother' at the memorial on the occasion of her 38th death anniversary.
Formerly called Mirra Alfassa, the Mother was the spiritual collaborator of philosopher and freedom fighter Aurobindo.
Devotees meditated before the memorial and also visited her room in the ashram premises, where the mother used to carry on her spiritual work. A mass meditation programme was organized by the ashram inmates.
AIR correspondent reports the birth anniversary is one of the few days in the year when rooms in which the Mother and Sri Aurobindo stayed are kept open for public viewing.
