Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated across the nation and a number of other countries today. At the main function in New Delhi, President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh led the nation in paying homage to the Father of the Nation by paying floral tributes at his Samadhi at Raj Ghat. UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi , Opposition leaders including and L K Advani and Sushma Swaraj were among the prominent dignitaries who paid their homage. An all religion prayer was also organised on the occasion. In Gujarat, all religion prayer meetings were held at Kirti Mandir and Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The nation also celebrated the 106 birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The President, the Vice President, Prime Minister and UPA chairperson were among those who visited Vijay Ghat to pay their homage. Floral tributes were also paid at Shastriji's portrait in Central Hall of Parliament.
