Nation remembers ex PM Indira Gandhi on her 95th birth anniversary

A grateful nation remembers former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 95th birth anniversary today. Mrs. Gandhi's birth anniversary is also observed as National Integration Day. Mrs Gandhi, born on 19th November, 1917 in the politically influential Nehru family, was the first woman Prime Minister of the country. After her father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's death in 1964, she became a Rajya Sabha member and was inducted in the Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting. She held three consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and a fourth term from 1980 until she was assassinated in 1984.
