Nation pays tributes to soldiers on 50th anniversary of 1965 Indo-Pak war

President Pranab Mukherjee today paid tribute to the war martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti to commemorate the 50th anniversary of 1965 war. Army Chief, General Dalbir Singh, Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan and Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, also paid their tributes to the martyrs. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar were also present in the commemoration.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tribute said, he bow to all brave soldiers who fought for the Motherland in the war. He also hailed the courage and bravery of Indian Armed Forces as very inspiring.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, the soldiers triumphed over every obstacle and protected India's unity and integrity. Recalling the then Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri's dynamic leadrship, Mr Modi said in 1965 he led from the front and he was a key source of strength for the nation.<br/><br/>The day marks victory of Indian forces in the battle in the strategic Haji Pir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir. The war started following Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against India.<br/><br/>India retaliated by launching a full-scale military attack on Pakistan.The seventeen-day war ended after a ceasefire was declared following diplomatic intervention by the Soviet Union and the US and the subsequent issuance of the Tashkent Declaration.
