Nation pays tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on 65th martyrdom day

The nation today fondly remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 65th Martyrdom day President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leading the country in paying homage to the Father of the Nation. Mrs. Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Dr. Singh paid floral tributes at Gandhi's memorial in Rajghat in New Delhi at a function organised on Monday morning. A two-minutes silence in memory of the Father of the Nation was also observed. A gun salute was also given to the late Mahatma to honour his contributions to the country.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A K Antony, senior BJP leader L K Advani, chiefs of three services, central ministers, leaders of various political parties and people from different walks of life also paid tributes to the apostle of peace at his memorial. A multi-faith prayer service was organised and devotional songs were sung.

In Gujarat, Series of functions have been organised at Sabarmati Gandhi Ashrama- in Ahmedabad and Kirti Mandir in Porbandar to remember the Mahatma Gandhi. AIR Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that All religion prayer is being held a Sabarmati Gandhi Ashrama early this morning.

A two day All India Gandhian’s Summit has been organized at Guwahati to mark the occasion by Assam government and Gandhi Global Family. State Health department also launched new health schemes coinciding the death anniversary of Gandhi.

Addressing the summit, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who is also the President of Gandhi Global Family said that the ideology and principle of Mahatma Gandhi is still relevant for all the citizens of the country. He said that the UPA government has committed to fulfil the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi of the overall development of the rural areas.

The health minister added that the Centre’s schemes on health, construction of school and roads uplift the living standard of rural people. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also addressed the gathering and stress the need to uplift the condition of the rural people.
