Grateful nation is paying tributes today to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar on its 91st anniversary.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony is scheduled to visit the spot on Tuesday afternoon.

A light and sound programme is being started from today at Jallianwala bagh, depicting the massacre scene of 1919.

The aim of this show is to tell the young generation about the martyrs of Freedom Movement.

In 1919, people organized a peaceful general meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh , against the proclamation issued by General Dyer, the military commander of Amritsar which forbade public meetings and processions.

People were not adequately informed of this proclamation.

General Dyer, was determined to make an example of this meeting and wanted to terrorize the people into submission.

He surrounded the Bagh with his troops, closed off the exit and then ordered his soldiers to shoot into the crowd with their machine-guns and rifles.

The firing lasted for 10 to 15 minutes, until ammunition was running short.

About 379, innocent people killed and 1100 others injured in this genocide.
