President Pranab Mukherjee today paid tribute to the war martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti to commemorate the 50th anniversary of 1965 war.<br/><br/>Army Chief, General Dalbir Singh, Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan and Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, also paid their tributes to the martyrs. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar were also present in the commemoration.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tribute said, he bow to all brave soldiers who fought for the Motherland in the war.<br/><br/>He also hailed the courage and bravery of Indian Armed Forces as very inspiring.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, the soldiers triumphed over every obstacle and protected India's unity and integrity.<br/><br/>Recalling the then Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri's dynamic leadrship, Mr Modi said in 1965 he led from the front and he was a key source of strength for the nation.<br/><br/>The day marks victory of Indian forces in the battle in the strategic Haji Pir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir.<br/><br/>The war started following Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against India.<br/><br/>India retaliated by launching a full-scale military attack on Pakistan.<br/><br/>The seventeen-day war ended after a ceasefire was declared following diplomatic intervention by the Soviet Union and the US and the subsequent issuance of the Tashkent Declaration.<br/>
