Nation pays tribute to martyrs on 16th Kargil Victory Day today

Kargil Vijay Diwas Day was observed today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to the martyrs. On the 16th Kargil Victory Day, Mr Modi said the day reminds of valor of Indian military and its supreme sacrifice. Prime minister also paid glowing tributes to the martyrs in his Mann Ki Baat programm. <br/><br/>Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and deputy Chief of the Naval Staff paid tribute at the India Gate Amar Jawan Jyoti to the martyrs who gallantly laid down their lives for the nation in the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan. <br/><br/>In Jammu & Kashmir, the weeklong celebrations of 16th Vijay Diwas came to close today at Drass in Kargil district of Ladakh division. The Kargil war was fought from 03rd May to 26 July in 1999 against Pakistan intruders who in the winters of 1998 transgressed into this side of territory along the Line of Control and occupied fortified defences overlooking the National Highway 1-A in Drass, Kargil and Batalik of the Ladakh region. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the concluding proceedings opened with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Drass War Memorial led by Northern Command General Commanding Officer Lieutenant General DS Hooda. Lt Gen Hooda interacted with the next of kin of the martyrs, widows of war heroes- the Veer Naris and the gallantry award winners. The emotional tune of the war related presentation titled The Last Post played after the wreath laying ceremony, moved the audience to tears. <br/><br/>Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag yesterday after laying wreath at the Memorial said his troops will never allow a repeat of the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan. Members of Pune based Association for Blinds lit lamps in memory of heroes. Four Param Vir Chakras, nine Maha Vir Chakras, 53 Vir Chakras and other medals had been awarded to felicitate the Kargil War heroes.
