Nation pays homage to martyrs of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks

Floral tributes were paid today to the martyrs who laid down their lives while fighting terrorists who had attacked Mumbai city on this day seven years ago. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was among the dignitaries who paid homage at the 26/11 police memorial site at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana in south Mumbai. Fadnavis said he pays homage to the brave policemen who fought for Mumbai's safety and laid down their lives for us. He said the government is proud of them and will strive hard for safety and security of Maharashtra. He added that strengthening the police force with better equipment was a priority.<br/> <br/>Maharashtra Director General of Police Praveen Dixit and Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed too paid tributes at the 26/11 memorial. Several other senior police officers from state besides, family members of the policemen, who lost their lives during the 2008 attacks, were also present at the ceremony. A one-day blood donation camp has been organised at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as a mark of solidarity with the victims of 26/11 attacks. Social Media and Twiteratti too was abuzz with tributes to the martyrs and vicimts of the most audacious terror attacks. <br/><br/>On November 26, 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists arrived on Mumbai shores by sea-route and killed 166, including 18 security personnel, and injuring 308 others, besides damaging property worth crores. The then ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Mumbai's Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte, Senior Police Inspector and Encounter Specialist Vijay Salaskar and Sub-Inspector Tuakram Ombale were among those killed in the attack. The attacks that began on 26 November lasted until 29 November, 2008. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital and Nariman House-a Jewish community centre were some of the places targeted by the terrorists. Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist captured alive. He was hanged four years later on November 21, 2012 at Pune's Yerwada jail
