'Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries

The nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 146 birth anniversary. The country also pays tribute to the Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shari on his 111th birth anniversary.<br/><br/>At a main function in new Delhi, The President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Senior leaders from various political parties were among those who joined in paying homage to the Father of the Nation.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister posted a sepia-toned picture of Gandhi, standing beside a broom, to emphasise the Gandhian vision-driven mission of 'Swachh Bharat'.<br/>An all-faith prayer ceremony was also held on the occasion at the memorial.<br/><br/>The Ambassadors of various countries and a large number of school children also gathered at the venue to pay homage to BAPU at Rajghat.<br/><br/>The nation also paid homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who gave the country a war cry 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', during 1965 war against Pakistan at his memorial at Vijay Ghat.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister twitted "Salutation on the anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri ji.<br/><br/>In his message, he also posted a picture, saying that he bows to the proud son of India Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. <br/><br/>United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today said the courage and determination of Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration for the world at a time of escalating conflicts, violent extremism, displacement and humanitarian need. <br/><br/>In a message on the International Day of Non-Violence, Mr Ban Ki Moon said, Mr Gandhi showed the power of peacefully opposing oppression and hatred. Ban Ki Moon said, Mahatma Gandhi showed how cooperation and tolerance can prevails over injustice.<br/><br/>He said, the United Nations stands for the peaceful resolution of disputes and for mutual respect across culture, faith and other lines that might divide. 2nd October is also being observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.
