Nation pays homage to ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 94th birth anniversary today

India remembers the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 94th birth anniversary.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, many Cabinet Ministers paid floral tributes at her memorial Shakti Sthal on the banks of Yamuna.

Union Ministers P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kamal Nath, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Krishna Tirath and Ashwini Kumar were among those who visited the Indira Gandhi memorial.

AIR correspondent reports that National Integration Week is also being observed across the country from today as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

A series of functions are being organized in the national capital today to highlight the contribution of Indira Gandhi in nation building.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust has also organized a photo exhibition based on her life at her memorial. Known as an Iron lady she became the first lady Prime Minister of the country.

Under her leadership India emerged as a strong economic power and robust military force.

The government is running a successful pro-poor Housing flagship Programme Indira Awas Yojna and many welfare programmes as a tribute to her contributions for the development of the country.
