Nation pays homage to Ambedkar on his 54th death anniversary

Lakh of people from across the country today paid tributes in Mumbai today to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 54th death anniversary. Like every year, this year too the followers of Dr. Ambedkar gathered at Chaitya Bhoomi at Shivaji Park in Dadar to show their love and respect to the architect of the Indian constitution who fought all his life for the rights of the lower caste people. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also paid their tributes to Dr. Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi this morning. Keeping in mind the magnanimity of the event, elaborate security arrangements have been made in the city. Heavy police deployment has been made in and around Chaityabhoomi, where Dr. Ambedkar’s last rites were performed. A total 32 CCTV cameras is monitoring the Shivaji Park area. Bomb detection and disposal squad and sniffer dogs have been stationed near Chaityabhoomi. To house the crowd, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pitched tents across 1.5 lakh sq ft area. Medical stalls, mobile toilets and temporary bathrooms have been put up beside the tents. Arrangements are in place to provide both drinking and food facility. It has also posted nearly 1,000 BMC and NGO workers at the site to man the monument. Various routes have been diverted and restrictions have been imposed to ensure smooth traffic movement. Central Railway is running seven suburban special trains between Thane/Kurla to Dadar and Vashi/Mankhurd to Dadar today. BEST is also plying 47 additional bus services from Dadar.Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, died on December 6, 1956 and since the day is known ‘Mahaparinirvan Diwas’, when Dalits across the state and the country travel to Mumbai to offer tributes.
