Nation paying tributes to martyrs of 1971 war on Vijay Diwas

The nation is paying tributes to the Martyrs today who laid down their lives during 1971 India-Pakistan war on the occasion of Vijay Diwas. On the occasion, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with three Service chiefs paid tributes to the Martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti.<br/><br/>On this day in 1971, the chief of eastern command of the Pakistani forces, Lt. General A A Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, had surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, led by Lt. General Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka after their defeat in the war. The end of the war also resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.<br/><br/>Special programmes are also being organised at the headquarters of the Eastern Command at the Fort William in Kolkata to celebrate the day.<br/><br/>Bangladeshi Mukti Joddhas(freedom fighters), Indian war veterans and serving Officers of the Armed Forces led by GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi came together at the Eastern Command "Vijay Smarak" (War Memorial) in Kolkata today to commemorate the victory of Indian Forces and Mukti Bahini over Pakistani Forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.<br/><br/>Lt Gen Amrik Singh, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, Lt Gen Rajeev Tewari, General Officer Commanding, Bengal Area, Air Vice Marshal KPUK Nair, Rear Admiral Narayan Prasad and a large number of serving & retired personnel of the three Services paid homage by laying wreaths at Vijay Smarak.<br/><br/> Bangladesh Food Minister, Md. Qamrul Islam also placed wreath alongwith other serving & retired Officers of the 30-member Bangladeshi delegation who were present on the occasion. Vijay Diwas celebrations at Eastern Command assume a special significance as Mukti Jodhas & Indian war veterans who fought shoulder to shoulder reunite every year to celebrate this momentous occasion in history.<br/><br/>The Bangladesh Deputy High Commision in Kolkata is observing the day outside its premises for the first time this year today. Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila and a host of other artistes are to perform at this mega event, to be held in association of the West Bengal government, later in the evening.
