Nation observes 68th anniversary of Quit India movement today

The Nation today observes the 68th anniversary of Quit India movement. Various events, lectures and exhibitions are being organised across the country to mark the day. A three day exhibition of rare documents on freedom struggle is being organised to commemorate the anniversary by the archives department of Haryana from today at Panchkula near in Chandigarh. A lecture by Professor JP Mishra is being held in Banaras Hindu University on “Remembering Quit India movement”. The Quit India Movement or Bharat Chhodo Andolan was a civil disobedience movement launched in August 1942 in response to Mahatma Gandhis call for immediate independence.The Lok Sabha today paid homage to the Father of the Nation and all those martyrs who laid down their lives in the freedom struggle. Making a reference in the House, the Speaker Ms Meira Kumar recalled the launch of Quit India movement to liberate the nation from the shackles of colonialism and imperialism on this day in 1942. She said the Quit India movement shook the very foundation of the colonial rule in India and contributed immensely in achieving the cherished goal of freedom of the country.In Mumbai, August Kranti Din was observed today to mark the Quit India Movement. On this occasion, Mumbai Unit of National Congress Party along with National Mill Workers Association held a silent march from Mumbai central railway station to historical August Kranti Maidan in the city. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhgan Bhujbal and various other dignitaries were present in large numbers. The dignitaries paid tribute to the martyrs and offered prayers to the 'Hutatma Smarak' in the August Kranti Maidan. Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Minister said it is important to maintain unity among the people so that the country’s freedom does not get hampered. Meanwhile Prabhat Pheries and singing of patriotic songs were organised at the August Kranti maidan, as politicians, freedom fighters, senior citizens and youth visited the historic site. Demonstrations, sit-ins, rallies, protest marches will be organised throughout the country during the justice week which starts from Monday
