Festival of Makar Sankranti is being celebrated in many parts of the country today. It was also celebrated in several areas on Friday.In Uttar Pradesh, devotees are taking holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati in Allahabad for the second day today.Magh Mela administration claimed that more than 10 lakh people took bath at Sangam on Friday.In Andhra Pradesh, people are celebrating Makar Sankranti, the second day of the harvest festival with traditional fervor and gaiety. Air correspondent reports that being an agrarian state, the festival is celebrated all across Andhra Pradesh but is predominant in the villages as all segments of society celebrate it with much pomp and show.In Tamil Nadu, Pongal is being celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and devotion. It signifies the end of winter and the onset of spring. Today is Surya Pongal day in which Pongal is offered to the Sun.In Assam, the post-harvest festival- Bhogali Bihu is being celebrated across the state with traditional pomp and gaiety today.Organising community feasts, preparation of delicious Assamese foods, sports, cultural programmes and lighting of traditional bonfire in the paddy fields and open grounds are some of the other highlights of the festival, also known as Magh Bihu.Maghi Melas are being organized across the State where traditionally-produced items are exhibited.
