Nation celebrates Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna

Janmashtami, a festival of the birth of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated today in several parts of the country with religious devotion and gaiety. It was also celebrated in some parts of the country yesterday.In the National Capital, temples have been decorated with flowers and colourful lights on the occasion. Special security arrangements have been made at temples including Birla Mandir, Jhandewalan, ISCKON, Chhattarpur and Gauri Shankar Mandir. Delhi Police said, CCTV cameras and watch towers have also been installed around these temples to keep a close watch on the suspects to avoid any untoward incident. security has also been tightened at all the market places.The President Mrs Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh have greeted the nation on the occasion.Janmashtami was was celebrated in Bangladesh yesterday. Colourful Janmastami processions displaying the events of the life of Krishna were organised in Dhaka and the divisional cities and districts. Hundreds of devotees including women and children participated in the daylong programmes which included special pujas and prayers in temples. Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting the members of the Hindu community marking the day and wished happiness and well being in their life.In Uttar Pradesh Janmashtami, the birth occasion of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated with full enthusiasm, peace and gaiety across the state. The temples, especially at Mathura and Vrindavan and ISKCON temples at several cities of the state are tastefully decorated on this occasion. A huge rush of worshippers is spotted outside the temples for Darshan Pujan since morning. In some parts of state it was celebrated on Wednesday.According to reports available from Mathura the birth place of Lord Krishna hordes of people from all walks of life are congregated at Mathura to witness the festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervour.In the Bankey Bihari temple of Vrindavan, the Krishna Janma Bhoomi and Dwarakadhish temple of Mathura, the festival is celebrated in the night and the devotees can perform the 'Mangla Darshan' at mid night.Lakhs of devotees from different parts of the world are participating parikrama of Giri Goverdhan, which is considered perfect occasion to seek blessings of the Almighty. The festival is not limited to the temples only in Brij Mandal, the streets of the Brij can be seen crowded with devotees and people celebrate the festival in their home as well.Large numbers of devotees even from abroad chanting Hare Krishna are also gathered at ISCON temples at Mathura Allahabad, Varanasi and other places to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna. Religious processions depicting life of Lord Krishna were taken out at several places across the state on Wednesday. At most of the police stations and police lines of the state very decorative exhibitions depicting life of Lord Krishna have been put up and cultural programmes are taking place.Adequate security arrangements are in place in and around Mathura. Besides state police Para military forces are also deployed. AIR Bhuj correspondent reports that colourfully decorated procession with beautifully displayed tableaux are being taken out in old towns and cities of the region. At the famous pilgrim place of Dwarka large number of pilgrims have gathered to participate in the Krishna Janmotsav. AIR correspondent Alpana Pant Sharma reports from Mumbai that chants of govinda ala re can be heard at Dahi Handi celebrations all over Mumbai. Mumbai always celebrates janmashtami in its own unique way. Little boys dressed as lord Krishna try to emulate his childhood antics. Boys and men dressed in colourful t-shirts and even women from human pyramids and the competition is fierce to break the Dahi Handi and get the prize money. Political parties have announced huge prize money for the winners. This festival creates camaraderie among youth and gives a healthy outlet to their energies. Bollywood and corporate sponsorship and disc jockey havealso teamed up to celebrate Mumbai’s youth energy with style this Janmashtami.
