<br/>Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Parimal Nathwani demanded to fill up the vacant post of Judges and transferring more cases to the Fast Track courts. In a letter to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mr. Nathwani said that delay in deciding court cases defeat the very purpose of approaching courts. Mr. Nathwani, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and justice, has pointed out that as many over 55 thousand cases were pending before the Supreme Court as on December 31, 2009 and civil and criminal cases pending before 21 High courts stood at over 41 lakhs . <br/><br/>The civil and criminal cases pending with subordinate courts numbered 2 crore 70 lakhs. In his letter, Mr. Nathwani said that there were nearly 14 thousand judges in the subordinate courts against sanctioned strength of 16,746, which resulted in extra burden of 1950 cases against an ideal average of about 200 to 500 cases per single judge. <br/><br/>In order to reduce the burden of criminal courts, Mr. Nathwani called for decriminalization of certain petty offences and taking them out of jurisdiction of criminal courts.
