Narendra Modi appears before SIT

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today appeared before the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team and was questioned for the first time on his alleged role in the 2002<br/>Gujarat riots.<br/><br/>After being questioned for five hours by the probe team, Mr.Modi appeared before the media and said that he answered all the questions. He said the probe is impartial and he has full faith in the Constitution. He said, he has taken a break for few hours and will appear again before the SIT tonight.<br/><br/> Mr.Modi is the first-ever chief minister of any state to be called for questioning in a criminal complaint of mass murder after he and his administration were accused of aiding and abetting riots in one area in Ahmedabad. The SIT had summoned Mr.Modi to depose in connection with a complaint of Mrs.Zakia Jaffery, widow of former Congress MP Eshan Jaffery, who was killed in Gulbarg society riots case of 2002 along with 69 others. The complaint also alleged that he had instructed officers not to take action.<br/><br/>Gujarat Government Spokesman Jai Narayan Vyas dismissed suggestions of a setback to Mr.Modi following his appearance before SIT.<br/><br/>Congress has slammed Modi saying his appearance has brought ill-repute to the high office he holds. Party spokesman Manish Tewari said, BJP should have asked Modi to step down before bringing such a high office to ill-repute. <br/><br/>BJP has hailed Mr. Modi's appearance before SIT. Talking to AIR, Party spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that by appearing before SIT, Mr. Narendra Modi has demolished all mischievous speculation and scored a political victory. He said BJP has great faith in the Chief Minister of Gujarat.<br/><br/>Mrs. Zakia Jaffery has expressed happiness over Modi's appearance before the probe team and said that she was hoping to get justice now.
