Namal Rajapaksa and six others arrested over protest at Indian consulate in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and six others were arrested late last evening over the protests staged outside Indian consulate in Hambantota last week. <br/><br/>Namal, who is the son of former President Mahinda Rajapakse, along with others was sent to remand custody till next Tuesday. Joint opposition MPs D.V. Chanaka and Prasanna Ranaweera were also among those arrested. They were arrested after being questioned by the Hambantota Police last evening.<br/><br/>Earlier, Hambantota Police had arrested 28 protesters including 6 women for a number of charges including damaging public property and violating court orders during the protest. <br/><br/>The Joint Opposition organized the protest against the government's initiative to hand over the operations of Hambantota Port to China and the proposed lease of Mattala airport to India.
