Lebanon's President Michel Suleiman has appointed Najib Mikati as the new Prime Minister of the country. According to a presidential statement, the decision was taken following Parliamentary consultations held by President Michel Suleiman on the 24 and 25 of this month. Mikati is backed by Hezbollah and its allies who has secured nomination of 68 members of parliament of the country's 128-member assembly. Speaking after the appointment, Mikati said he would start talks to form the government 27th January and urged all Lebanese factions to overcome their differences. Meanwhile protests turned violent in Lebanon's Tripoli as frenzied demonstrators torched vehicles protesting the appointment of a Hezbollah-backed premier. Angry demonstrators set upon the vehicle of a satellite channel, smashing the windshield and tearing down the satellite dish before setting it on fire. The United States has warned that a dominate role in the next Lebanese government for the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement would be problematic for U.S.-Lebanon relations. Hezbollah has long been on the U.S. State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations. Hezbollah-led opposition brought down the unity government of Sa'ad Hariri earlier this month after Hariri’s refusal to disassociate from UN tribunal investigating the assassination of his father and former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
