Naidu defends NDTV India ban, says UPA gave 21 such orders

Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has defended the government's one-day ban on hindi news channel NDTV India for allegedly airing strategic content. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Mr Naidu rejected the Congress allegation saying that the Congress-led UPA government had banned 21 channels during its tenure for airing unauthorised content on television.

He said, the NDA government was worried about daylight portrayal of terror activities with running commentary on the whereabouts of arms depot. The Minister said, people who are criticizing the action are the same people who had put behind bars an artist for cartoons.

Hitting out at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his comment that democracy is facing its darkest hour under the Modi government, Mr Naidu said, Indian democracy has never been more vibrant. He said, people from all walks of life have a say in government issues. Taking a dig at the proposed mahagatbandhan led by Samajwadi Party, Mr Naidu said, people talking about it are all frustrated leaders.
