Nagpur Bench of Bombay HC commutes death sentence of six accused to life imprisonment

<br/> The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court has commuted the death sentence of the six accused to the life imprisonment in the Khairlanji killings case in Bhandara district four years ago. The court has also retained the life imprisonment of the remaining two accused persons given by the Bhandara Sessions Court in September last year. All these convicts would have to undergo the life imprisonment for twenty five years including the time they have already served in prison. <br/><br/>The Division Bench consisting of Mr. Justice A.P. Lavande and Mr. Justice R. C. Chavan pronounced the verdict in the case via video conference as one of the judges participated from Mumbai. Earlier, the Division Bench had postponed the verdict till today.<br/> Four persons of a Dalit family were brutally murdered and their bodies were thrown into a canal in Khairlanji in Bhandara district on September 29, 2006. The incident led to furore and violent reactions all over the state. Following this, the Maharashtra Government had handed over the probe to the CBI which in turn filed the charge sheet against the eleven persons after investigations.
