Nagaland Session passes 33% Reservation of Women in Urban Local Bodies

On the last day of the Nagaland Winter Session today, the House passed the 33 per cent Reservation of Women in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). <br/><br/>The Chief Minister and the Leader of the House T.R. Zeliang moved the consideration and passing of the Nagaland Municipal (Third Amendment) Bill, 2016.<br/><br/>In regard to the bill Parliamentary Secretary for Housing Levi Rengma, sought a clarification on whether the absence of women candidates will allow male candidates to fill the vacancy, to which the Leader of the House clarified that in the case of wards which are vacant and void of women candidates, the government will issue fresh notifications and as such, men cannot represent the reserved seats. <br/><br/>Earlier, Independent MLA, Thomas Ngullie raised objections in the revoking of the resolution with regard to 33% women reservation in Municipalities and opposed the move . After completing all the business of the session which began on 22nd of this month, the Speaker Chotisuh Sazo adjourned the House sine die at 12.30 noon today.
