In Nagaland, over one lakh fifty-five thousand Children in the age group of 0-5 years are being targeted for oral polio vaccine today as part of the nationwide Pulse Polio immunisation drive. Kicking off the State-level launch of the Polio Immunisation drive at Urban Primary Health Center Siekhazou in Kohima, Principal Director Health and Family Welfare Department Nagaland, Dr. Ritu Thurr administered the first two polio drops to an infant baby girl. Speaking at the programme, Dr. Thurr said immunisation is one the most effective methods for the prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases. He said the country's UIP is one of the largest public health intervention programmes in the world today, as approximately 27 million infants and 30 million pregnant women are being targeted, to provide them the protection of vaccine-preventable diseases. Dr. Thurr said, the state has targeted one lakh 55 thousand 550 children in the age group of 0-5 years for the oral polio vaccine drive.<br />''&nbsp;<br />''He said, the Health Department has set up 1550 polio booths to administer the vaccine to the children. Dr. Thurr also said, door-to-door visits will be conducted on the 4th and the 5th of March, to ensure that the oral polio vaccine is administered to children who may have missed receiving the vaccine today. The Principal Director further appealed to all stakeholders, NGOs, Churches and village councils, to extend their helping hand towards the Polio programme.
