Nagaland: No fresh violence reported; Situation is tense but under control

In Nagaland, no fresh violence was reported today and the situation is tense but under control in capital Kohima after last night's arson by violent mob, in which several government offices were burnt down. Kohima Superintendent of Police, Joseph Hesso told AIR that sufficient police personnel have been deployed and Paramilitary have been called in. <br/><br/>Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in four sensitive areas.<br/> Violent mobs went on the rampage in the state capital Kohima to vent their anger against ongoing elections to urban local bodies. The Tribal groups are against 33 per cent reservation for women in the municipal bodies. They are also demanding the resignation of Chief Minister TR Zeliang and his entire cabinet for going ahead with the polls. Chief Minister TR Zeliang has rejected their demand and appealed to the people to stop violence and not fall prey to rumour mongers.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh today said all efforts are being made to bring normalcy in violence hit Nagaland. Talking to media outside Parliament, Mr Singh said Centre has taken cognizance of the current prevailing situation in the state. On a query, the Minister said Centre has taken several steps to ensure development of the north-eastern states.
