National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) has offered states to arrange supply of onion through its branches to meet its demand in the market. A letter to this effect has been written by the NAFED chairman to the state chief ministers. Presently, NAFED is selling onion through retail outlets. It has already announced to import 25 thousand tonnes of onion from Pakistan. Government's trading arms STC, MMTC and PEC have been asked to import onions to meet the domestic requirement. Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar reviewed the demand and supply position of onion at a high level meeting in New Delhi. He later said, that onion prices will come down quickly as government has taken up a set of measures including ban on its exports and abolishing duty on its imports. AIR correspondent reports, the onion prices have started coming down in retail markets. An official release says, the wholesale price has declined by 38 per cent in the Azadpur Mandi in Delhi. The Railways have set up a special cell to monitor and supervise the movement of onion by rail. Zonal railways have also been instructed to make sufficient wagons and rakes available for the purpose. The ministry has decided to work with all concerned departments to help ease current onion crisis.
