Mysore gears up for Jumboo Savari

The city of palaces, Mysore is gearing up for the world famous jumbo savari on Sunday—the grand finale of the ten-day Navaratri festivities.Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa will flag off the famous four km procession after performing puja to the 'Nandidwaja' in front of the Mysore Palace. Later, he will also flag off the procession inside the Palace premises. The state government will offer worship to Goddess Chamundewari, whose idol would be placed in the 750 kg golden 'howdah' to be carried by the 51 year-old pachyderm Balarama at the end of the procession, which will also be telecast live.Mysore District in-charge minister S A Ramadas told UNI that the 400th year of the celebration this time, was also significant as it marks the 125th birth anniversary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and the 100th year of the Palace. The procession will began with a 21 gun salute by police personnel. There will be more than 100 units in the procession which, for the first time, include 32 tableaux of Royal family history from centuries and various contingents of police and folk troupes. After the procession the festivities will conclude with a torch light parade at Bannimantapa in which Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj will receive the Guard of Honour in the presence of the Chief Minister, other ministers and guests.Meanwhile, there is a big influx of tourists, including a good number of forigners this year to witness the festivities. According to officials so far, more then two million people had already visited the city and witnessed the various cultural programmes.
