Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Suu Kyi vows for freedom of speech

Myanmar's pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, addresses a large crowd of her supporters in Rangoon, a day after her release from house arrest. In her speech, she said, the basis of democratic freedom is freedom of speech. But she warned that if people wanted change they would have to achieve it in the right way. Today, Ms Suu Kyi's car was surrounded by a large crowd as it approached the National League for Democracy headquarters in Rangoon. In her speech, Ms Suu Kyi also called her followers to work together for national unity in Myanmar. She said that nothing could be achieved without people's participation. She told the cheering crowd, please let us know what you are thinking, what is on your mind. I would like to know over the last six years what changes have taken place in the people's life.Despite spending 15 of the last 21 years in jail, the Nobel Laureate has made it clear that she intends to continue to be a politician. There are widespread concerns that this could lead to her being re-arrested by Myanmar's military-turned civilian government, although officials say there are no conditions attached to her release. Earlier, Ms Suu Kyi met party officials and about 30 foreign diplomats.
