Myanmar's military-backed government has announced a limited clemency program that cuts all current prison sentences by one year. State media say, President Thein Sein signed a general amnesty decree that includes the prison term cuts along with orders commuting death sentences to life in prison. The announcement did not say which, if any, of the country's 2,200 political prisoners jailed during Myanmar's decades of military rule will be included in the prison term cuts. Nyan Win, who is a spokesman for pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, said the term cuts will not offer much benefit to political prisoners, most of whom are serving long sentences.The U.S. State Department on Monday reiterated its call for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Myanmar.
